Nissan’s commitment to the UK dates back to 1984 when it established its production site in Sunderland, which commenced operations in 1986. This facility has grown to become the largest plant in the history of the UK car industry. It plays a crucial role in Nissan’s global operations, supported by international design and R&D facilities in London and Cranfield, a parts center in Lutterworth, and Sales and Marketing operations in Rickmansworth. Nissan’s UK operations employ 7,000 people and support an additional 30,000 jobs within the supply chain.

In 2023, Uchida visited Sunderland to announce the production of three new electric vehicles (EVs) in the UK. These include the next generation Nissan LEAF and future electric versions of the Nissan Qashqai and Nissan Juke, under the ambitious Nissan EV36Zero blueprint for EV manufacturing. This initiative underscores Nissan’s commitment to sustainable mobility and innovation, aligning with global trends toward electrification and environmental responsibility.
