The United Nations Development Programme  and Samsung have partnered to empower youth in accelerating climate change action through new AI.

Dubai, UAE, 29 April 2024

In an increasingly climate-conscious world, Samsung Electronics MENA has announced a partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to take the lead on a pathbreaking initiative.

The ACT28 AI for Climate Hackathon is a platform that utilizes frontier technologies in solving climate change challenges with innovative solutions. Samsung Electronics MENA and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are excited to announce registrations open for the ACT28 AI for Climate Hackathon.

The event shall leverage, among other things, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and mobile solutions in developing sustainable solutions for the current challenging issues of climate change.

Harnessing Digital Innovation for Environmental Sustainability

Set against the backdrop of the recent COP28 event in Dubai, the ACT28 Hackathon represents a strategic collaboration aiming to engage young tech innovators in the fight against climate change. This program is under the cooperation between Samsung and the UNDP, which aims at providing an opportunity for emerging youth data scientists, AI developers, and climate tech experts from the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and Turkey to apply their skills toward the advance of United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, they will focus on Climate Action, Life below Water, and Life on Land.

A platform for visionary climate solutions.

The hackathon will, however, feature teams that will work on solutions for some of the challenges posed by advanced technologies, such as IoT for real-time monitoring, Blockchain for transparent climate finance, and Geospatial Technologies for location-based applications.

They will have more opportunities than ever before to develop mobile applications that could change the face of climate tech through Galaxy AI’s superior on-device and cloud-based capabilities.

High-profile mentors include those from Saudi Arabia: Nora Altwaijri, and from Turkey: Oğuz Ergen. The two Generation17 mentors are part of those invaluable resources that Samsung and UNDP have partnered to bring to this hackathon, as they will be guiding and accompanying the participants throughout the hackathon.

In addition to mentorship, there will be a series of workshops on AI, climate change, and mobile technology, among others, aimed at equipping the respective participants with the necessary skills in developing impactful technological solutions.

Display of Innovation and Collaboration

The event will culminate in a Demo Day at which the top 10 teams will present their innovative solutions to the industry expert, investor, and policymaker audience. The top three will be announced at a special awards ceremony held in Dubai, where the best parties contributing to climate action and sustainable development are celebrated.
